What is autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a range of conditions. It can be  characterized by challenges with repetitive behaviors, speech, nonverbal communication and social interaction.

ASD has other subtypes such as

  • Asperser’s Syndrome

  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder known as PDD-NOS

  • Rett’s Syndrome

  • Childhood disintegrative disorder

Each child with ASD may have a definite set of strengths and challenges. Thus, the way where children with ASD may communicate, adapt, learn and even problem solve can be ranged from challenged to highly skilled. Some may require lesser support  and others may require daily support.

Signs of autism typically appear around the ages of 2 to 3 years old. In some cases, developmental delays can be seen as early as 18 months. Many research have proven that early intervention is important in minimizing developmental delays and enhancing their potential to the fullest
